After 1800, erotic subjects taken from mythology enjoyed increasing popularity.
Morpheus was the chief shaper of dreams (his name means "he who shapes"). He was assisted by his brothers. Icelus assisted with those aspects of dreams that reflected reality, Phobetor made fearsome dreams (hence "phobia") whilst Phantasus produced tricky and unreal dreams (hence "fantasy", "phantasmagoria", etc).
Iris was the personification of the rainbow and messenger to the gods. Some believe she was the messenger of the Gods because the rainbow touched both the earth and heaven. Homer says she served Zeus most faithfully. Later writers said she served Hera above all the other gods, even sleeping under her throne.
